• Built in FTP and SMB shares to easily transfer files

• Built in telnet, SSH and VNC servers for remote troubleshooting

• Webex support for Dell technical support access

• OMSA 6.4 built in for local and remote access

Please note that this guide is also provided on the desktop

of the OMSA LiveCD for those without internet access

 

you need:
• CD / DVD writer + 1 CD / DVD which is empty
• burn the LiveCD ISO file to the CD / DVD
• USB stick with 256 MB format the stick with FAT or FAT32

download with your Service Tag the Linux Red hat Binary files for the Update

Example: BIOS, BMC / IDRAC 6 Firmware, Raid Controller Firmware “click on the Server BIOS 11G

click on the Link Server BIOS 11G:
download the Update Package for Red Hat Linux (example: PER310_BIOS_LX_1.6.4.BIN)

download the *.BIN file and copy the file on your USB stick
(example:PER310_BIOS_LX_1.6.4.BIN)

Dell OMSA LiveCD 6.4 Starting the CD

- reboot the system

- insert LiveCD

- press F11 by post process to select the optical boot device CD / DVD

select with F11 Optical Drive (CD / DVD)

LiveCD boot please wait

please wait, dont try reboot or eject CD / DVD

first screen after boot from LiveCD

click on the computer icon on the desktop to open the USB DISK 2.0 Volume

-

open the USB stick you see the *:BIN file on the stick

-

select the file with right click and copy the file in the „/tmp” directory

open the root’s Home select „/“ and open the tmp directory

-

right click to „Paste“ the file in the tmp folder

-

cd /tmp, ls *.BIN, chmod +x *.BIN, change the rights from the *.BIN file

-

execute the file ./PER310_BIOS_LX_1.6.4.BIN

-

you see the new BIOS version and the Installed version

use „z“ to continue (update the BIOS)

update in process… don‘t stop this update please wait

please reboot the system and check after reboot the bios version in post process use „z

system try a reboot

Basic Linux Commands Reference

Remember Linux is case sensitive!

cd directory = Changes directory

pwd = displays current directory

ls = shows files in current directory

cp source destination = copies a file

cat file = prints a file on the screen

vi file = opens file with text editor

nedit file = opens file in GUI text editor

ifup eth0 = Enables NIC

ifdown eth0 = Disables NIC

ifconfig = similar to Windows “ipconfig”, configures network interfaces

ps –a | grep “name” = finds a running process with “name” in it

kill “process number” = stops the process as found in ps

shutdown -h now = powers off system
