Dell OMSA LiveCD provides the following features

Please note that this guide is also provided on the desktop of the OMSA LiveCD for those without internet access.

you need:

  • CD / DVD writer + 1 CD / DVD which is empty
  • burn the LiveCD ISO file to the CD / DVD
  • USB stick with 256 MB format the stick with FAT or FAT32
  • usernameroot  |  passworddell (older versions use: linux as password)

Dell OMSA LiveCD 6.5 Starting the CD

- reboot the system
- insert LiveCD
- press F11 by post process to select the optical boot device CD / DVD

usernameroot  |  passworddell (older versions use: linux as password)

step 1: select Optical Drive (CD / DVD) in the boot menu

step 2: LiveCD booting please wait

step 3: please wait, dont try reboot or eject CD / DVD

step 4: first screen after boot from LiveCD

step 5: click on the DSET icon on the left side

step 6: DSET gathering system information, dont close the terminal console

step 7: see under /tmp/data/*.zip

step 8: connect the USB stick on the system, check the device and mount the stick
# tail –f /var/log/messages connect the stick and check the device (example sdb: sdb1)

step 9: mount the USB Stick on the console # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt

step 10: click on the root‘s Home icon on the desktop

step 11: select the „/“ on the left side in the root’s Home window

step 12: open the tmp directory

step 13: open the data directory

step 14: copy with the right mouse click the DSET_Report_*.zip file on the mounted usb stick

step 15: select the „/“ on the left side in the root’s Home window

step 16: open the mnt directory

step 17: paste the DSET_Report_*.zip file on the usb stick over„Edit“

After the copy has finished … close all directory sessions.

step 18: umount the USB Stick on the console # cd / # umount /mnt

step 19: disconnect the USB stick from the system and try reboot # init 6

Basic Linux Commands Reference
Remember Linux is case sensitive!

cd directory = Changes directory

pwd = displays current directory

ls = shows files in current directory

cp source destination = copies a file

cat file = prints a file on the screen

vi file = opens file with text editor

nedit file = opens file in GUI text editor

ifup eth0 = Enables NIC

ifdown eth0 = Disables NIC

ifconfig = similar to Windows “ipconfig”, configures network interfaces

ps –a | grep “name” = finds a running process with “name” in it

kill “process number” = stops the process as found in ps

shutdown -h now = powers off system
