This guide helps you installing the OpenManage Server Administrator on your ESXi 5.x system.

In this example we're installing OMSA on an ESXi 5.1 system. The installation process will be the same within other ESXi versions like 5.0 and 5.5.

Please keep in mind that you will need a Windows based system where the OpenManage services are running. This might be a client or server system.

in vSphere:

  • choose the desired host
  • click „Configuration“ in the upper tap row
  • click „Security Profile“ in the „Software“ area in the lower left
  • click „Properties“ in the upper right corner
  • now click „SSH“ followed by clicking on „Options“
  • run the ssh services by clicking the „Start“ button – after the installation of OMSA you can deactivate the ssh services again

Installation

Connect to host using WinSCP. Ensure that the „File Protocol“ is set to SCP.

Copy the VIB package (related to your ESXi version) to the /tmp/ directory

Connecting to the host using Putty.

  • Log in using your credentials.
  • Switch to directory tmp using the command cd /tmp.
  • Check via command ls if the ViB package is in the correct directory.
  • Now input the following command line:
esxcli software vib install –d /tmp/OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-7.3.0-588_A00-VIB-ESX51i.zip
  • Hint: Pressing the TAB key after "OM" automatically completes the command, this prevents from misspelling.
  • OpenManage services going to be installed on the host now.

Afterwards you'll get a message that informs about the finished installation.

Now restart the host.

Now you can connect to this host by using a Windows system where OMSA is installed.
