Dell PowerEdge Servers a comprehensiv Solution for MySQL Database

Enterprise Solutions - Wiki

Dell Customers use many open source products, MySQL an open source Relational Database is one among them. This blog provides an overview of how we implemented MySQL  Database Solutions on Dell PowerEdge, PowerEdge 12th Generation servers, Power Connect Switch, and Dell Equallogic which contributes to MySQL Solutions greatly. At Dell solutions engineering we evaluate relational Databases like Oracle and SQL Server. Unlike any other relational database, MySQL is an open source Database, offers solutions in various steams like High Availability (), Replication and Single Instance Databases.

The MySQL Database works on a modular principle. Meaning to say, it operates on a concept called the Storage Engine, Based on your application needs you choose a specific storage engine. Few of the Storage Engines available are MyISAM (Default), InnoDB, Memory, NDBCLUSTER etc...  The use of Storage Engine is controlled by the Default-storage-engine parameter present in the my.ini/my.cnf file.

Here is a table that explains the purpose and use of most commonly used storage Engines.

Storage Engine

Purpose/Environment

MyISAM (Deafault)

Data warehouse and Web based Application (Not ACID Complaint)

InnoDB

OLTP Environment/ Transaction Complaint/ ACID Complaint

NDB or NDBCLUSTER

Used for a Clustered /HA Environment

For more detailed information on Storage Engines and which Storage Engine to use when?
Please refer to Storage Engines. For testing purposes we Evaluated both single Instance, and Clustered instance of MySQL in our Labs On the new Dell PowerEdge 12th Generation Systems. Some of the findings, Reference Architectures and sample graphs are discussed in the following Wiki Article. Additionally, How to implement a MySQL Cluster Database has also been discussed.

Disclaimer: - Though Dell doesn’t support MySQL on Dell platform but this article should help anyone to quickly deploy MySQL database with Dell Platform.
